Diffuse Alopecia

Alopecia Areata is a highly unpredictable, autoimmune skin disease that may lead to the loss of hair on the scalp and elsewhere on the body. This disease affects males and females of all ages and races, but it often begins in childhood. This disease affects approximately 2 percent of the population, or about 4.5 million people in the United States alone. It affects the young as well as the old, men as well as women. Hair loss from the body can be hidden but that from the scalp can be very embarrassing.

Diffuse Alopecia is a type of alopecia areata which affects more women than men. This disease results in hair loss as well as less density of hair. You see a mixture of dark and grey hair. The three steps in hair growth are Anagen, Catagen and Telogen. Hair grows in the first stage. It is dormant in the second stage. It falls in the third stage as the hair follicle rests. Then the cycle repeats. But in Diffuse Alopceia the hair skips the second stage and so, hair falls in clumps. At the borders of the bald patch hair breaks at ends and resembles exclamation marks.

Diffuse Alopecia could be caused due to mental or physical trauma, malnutrition, lack of vitamins or an incorrect diet could cause this disease. Medicines, pregnancy, hormonal imbalance, sickness or operations can be the reasons also. If you keep coloring, bleaching or curling your hair or if you are stressed, it could lead to this problem.

In case of alopecia areata, or areal hair loss, treatment is generally out-patient or it can be carried out in dermatological hospital (when hair loss process is extensive and prolonged). Vitamins A, E, C, H are used, as well as nicotinic, pantothenic and folic acids. Also doctors resort to preparations of furocoumarin, sedatives means, ACTH (drenocorticotropic hormones) and glucocorticoids in such cases. The latter are also used exteriorly as ointments. Rosental paste, alcoholic and etheric solutions with addition of sulfur, salicylic acid, tincture of siliculose pepper are applied. Also irradiation by UV-beams or photochemotherapy is sometimes used in course of therapy. Among physiotherapeutic means used in alopecia treatment are d'arsonvalization, cryotherapy with snow of carbonic acid, cryomassage and massage with electrobrush.
