Traction Alopecia is a condition marked by bald patches appearing on the sufferer’s head. The main cause for Traction Alopecia is because the hair follicles have been pulled tightly from things like braids, corn rows and even pony tails being too tight. This tension leads to hair to loosen from its follicular roots. This hair loss can be reversed but action has to be taken as soon as the problem becomes noticeable.
Millions of people damage their hair by wearing styles that pull too tightly on their hair. Known as traction alopecia, this type of hair loss is caused by styles such as cornrows or tight ponytails, which can pull hair out by the roots and traumatize the hair follicles. Aside from loss of hair, traction alopecia can be characterized by red bumps, infections, papules and pustules. Thinning is first noticed at the hairline and wherever the hair is pulled tightly.
Traction Alopecia can be treated and it's reversible in most cases, but you have to stop braiding your hair or wearing it in ponytails and buns. Keeping your hair tightly bound for long periods of time is a leading cause of traction alopecia. Stop using harsh chemicals. Bleaching your hair and using dyes or hair-straightening chemicals can weaken the tensile strength of your hair and cause it to detach and fall out more easily. Once this happens, even normal brushing and combing can cause hair to fall out.
If braiding, a ponytail or cornrows define your style, you need to change the way to wear your hair. Trimming the hair very short may help to establish a new style by allowing the damaged follicles to recover, but expect the process to take at least six months. A wig or other hair replacement system might be used to ease the transition. Using soft accessories and experimenting with new styles will reduce the damage from pulled hair loss.
Traction alopecia can also occur through the use ofchemical treatments such as hair dyes, bleaches and even hair straighteners. The issue here is that the hair can become fragile and can fall out with brushing and combing. Traction Alopecia needs to be tackled early on before any hair loss becomes permanent. You may have to consult a doctor or a trichologist to confirm the diagnosis. People using false eye lashes have been known to suffer too since their natural eyelashes will die off with their extensive and continued use.
It is easier to treat traction alopecia in the early stage, then later on when your hair has permanently stopped growing and your only option is having hair graft or transplant, in which healthy hair from another part of the head is transplanted to the spot or spots where hair has stopped growing.
